“Last night I saw one of the most awesome things that I have ever bore witness too! You know when you go to certain restaurants and they have some sort of ridiculous challenge. You know like eat a 20lb bucket of mussels and its free or perhaps eat a 72oz steak with all of the trimmings and its free? Well, Lonestar Bar and Grill in Pickering has the 72 oz steak challenge and photographer Richard Roth decided it was high time to step up and show the gawking children that it was time to mess with texas.

First, we checked out the wall of past contenders that had achieved their bovine goal. There were a couple polaroids of normal looking guys, then their were about five or six shots of pure eating machines, so focused that their pictures almost bit off your finger when you pointed. I must say that personally I faltered for a moment, but Richard was undaunted. They brought the steak out and this thing was huge (consider that 6 of us that were present ordered steak, and that our meals tabulated together equalled 72 oz of grilled goodness) The first twenty minutes went by and Roth was almost half done, a smile on his face. Although his lady friend was experiencing a bit of sympathy nausea. I was in total and utter awe. I’ve eaten some large steaks, but this was unbelievable!

After about forty minutes trouble started to set in. The veggies were gone, but a good quarter of the steak remained. Richard looked full, remember he had been non stop eating for forty full minutes. NO one likes a quitter, so he kept at it. It was pretty funny as people in the restaurant kept coming over for updates, the forty year old dads were so stoked and gave kind words of encouragement (I suspect that most were envious. The moms on the other hand just shook their heads, probably because the piece of meat was around the same size as a small child. Children just gawked in awe! The waiter was more than surprized that at the 50 minute mark, Rich had about 15 bites to go. The waiter had previously told us about his attempt that ended in failure, thus adding to his disbelief at the current progress.

Times were getting tough, but with lots of moral support, a controlled gag reflex and sheer determination Rich finished off the last bit (really how could you quite with only five bites left!) A drumroll sounded, waiters appeared, parents cheered, babies were kissed and Richard was in his glory. A polaroid was taken to document Richard’s crowning achievement and posted at the front door on the wall of fame. He also recieved a certificate and a t-shirt both testament to his ability to ingest grilled beef! Personally, I was more excited than a kid at Christmas, this was truly unbelievable, 72 solid oz. Thats 4 lbs 8 oz of steak!!!!!! f*cking incredible!! Richard, good show my friend, good show! I’m sure there will be many other recounts of this night on a couple of profiles and websites, since all that were present were forever affected by this experience.
