Tip of the hat to a great man, Saul Porto.
by Richard Roth on Aug.29, 2009, under Random Thoughts
I have a love hate relationship with Facebook… Its great for some things, not so great for many more. But, yet again, facebook came though in connecting me with one of the most influential photographers I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Saul Porto!
Some of you have met him at some of the older Wakestocks, Wasaga and one of the Toronto years. If you didn’t have the chance let me tell you how awesome this guy is. Six or seven years ago, when I was still fresh fish to the event photo world, I met Saul for the 1st time. We talked shop and hung out at the event though out the week. At the time I was using the first generation Canon Rebel and I believe Saul was on the 1 series (canon of coarse). I don’t know what I did right but the man actually lent me his 28-300mm L series lens to use for a few days. Saying ‘just give it back when your done’. I had just met him two days before and now he was lending a 18 year old kid he didn’t know a $1,500+ lens. I was in heaven as I was only using some Tamron 28-300mm as a zoom.
Years following I would always look forward to seeing Saul again. He brought me along to my first Grand Prix shoot at Mosport International Raceway where I learn a lot about not standing too close to cars moving 150mph… but also had a great time.
Saul is an amazing photographer and if you have the chance check out some of his work, Top News Photo and News Agency
Great hearing from you Saul, keep up the great work.

2008 LG Fashion Fusion, Toronto, Ontario

Fashion week
LG Fashion Fusion is one of the events of the Toronto Fashion week. This was my frst official fashion event shoot so I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off for most of the night but i think that worked out a little for me.. I wasn’t there shooting the typical shots you would see at a show. I was there shooting for LG and Eventsing, the hosts. I was to photograph the event as a whole, not one specific thing. A perfect example is when a dozen photogs were fighting to shoot photos of ‘important’ people entering the building I was back having a ball with my Fish eye, shooting the madness going on. This was a learning experiences for me though and I thank Andrew Singleton and the Eventsing crew for the help I received throughout the night.
There are WAY too many photos to post so I picked out some random ones I liked.
Enjoy.

Cellphone Madness

Outside the Venue

I think he was a fashion TV host..

I may have wondered into the make-up room, and then made a wrong turn into a change room… No photos though

Nice lounges before the madness arrives.

Spinning the tunes

One of the hosts of the night

That’s right, there is a Spoon and Fork coming out of her cup-hat.

Jedi meets Goldmember.

I wonder what they were looking at..?

Swimsuit models

Media frenzy

… Maroon 5… and Cellphone madness

I think I would look great with that boa

Spicy Lingerie

Amazing lighting in this place.

More amazing lighting.

Portraits of Anton Volek, Head Chef/Patron @ At The Five, Barrie, Ontario.
by Richard Roth on Aug.26, 2009, under People, Product and Fashion
I first met Anton randomly on a family vacation to Panama. A number of other families from the neighborhood I grew up in all went together in a group of 20-30 people and Anton was there with some friends I grew up with. I knew he was a good guy right away because he was walking around with a Canon 5D. Since then I have now done a couple photo shoots for his Restaurant, At The Five in Barrie, Ontario. The 1st being a food prep shoot on a very busy night during Barrielishious, a week where all the restaurants offer full coarse meals for $20. The other was this afternoon, portraits for their website launching one week from today. He was looking for a gritty Black and White look, I think I got what he had in mind.
I will link the restaurant site when its up. I also HIGHLY recommend going to At The Five if you have not yet.
Get a Strawberry Mule to drink while your there too, It’ll change your life

“Toronto, ON — Everyone who came out to the first night of the Snowboard Canada Snowboard Canada Film Festival presented by Monster Energy Party in association with Burton at the Sound Academy knows how awesome it was and if you didn’t make it, there’s still tonight. Here’s a sample of last night’s madness, which featured the Ontario premieres of Burton’s It’s Always Snowing Somewhere, Alterna’s Knockout: The…”

2008 Early season rail session. Scot Brown, Eric Brown, Matt Konings and Nate Kelly.
Collingwood, ON — Waking up to the first good snowfall of the season is the greatest feeling in the world. Last Sunday in Collingwood we were blessed with one to two feet of the white stuff and there was no way we were going to let it go to waste. My roommate Sam Marcotte and I called up Nate Kelly, Scot Brown, Eric Brown, and Matt Konings and hit the road for Duntroon. Check the photos and video for the recap.

The 11th edition of Wakestock kicked off in fine style with the Monster Energy Pro Athlete and Industry reception. Held on the rooftop pool deck at the Radisson Admiral Hotel overlooking Toronto harbour and the city skyline, the party welcomed riders to Wakestock. With a photo wall provided by SBC Wakeboard Magazine and Monster Energy, everyone took turns have their picture taken with the Monster Energy girls. Despite loads of free drinks being flowed by the crew from Monster Energy, no one ended up in the pool. Check the photo gallery below for some of the highlights.
