September 25th, 2008
Toronto, Ontario
Fashion week

LG Fashion Fusion is one of the events of the Toronto Fashion week. This was my frst official fashion event shoot so I was running around like a chicken with its head cut off for most of the night but i think that worked out a little for me.. I wasn’t there shooting the typical shots you would see at a show. I was there shooting for LG and Eventsing, the hosts. I was to photograph the event as a whole, not one specific thing. A perfect example is when a dozen photogs were fighting to shoot photos of ‘important’ people entering the building I was back having a ball with my Fish eye, shooting the madness going on. This was a learning experiences for me though and I thank Andrew Singleton and the Eventsing crew for the help I received throughout the night.

There are WAY too many photos to post so I picked out some random ones I liked.

Enjoy.

The Coors Light YOU LOOK GOOD Rider’s Cup (YLGRC09), Canada’s premier slopestyle series dropped into North Vancouver for the Mt Seymour Open. On Saturday February 21st the sun rose of the distant peaks and shone down on the newly designed and rebuilt terrain park featuring a skate-style rail arena, the Ripzone step-down jump and a mellow forty-five foot jump to end of the slopestyle course. Weeks leading up to the event the Vancouver, Whistler and Canadian snowboard scene was a buzz with the new location chosen for the western Canada stop, the high pre registration numbers were representative of the large rider attendance as we welcomed the largest competitive field since inception with just shy of a 150 rider. In addition to the manicured slopestyle course was a bird-eye view nestled Coors Light beer garden which drew the industries elite out of the suburbs of Vancouver.

As the day progressed temperatures rose above 10 degrees and all 150 athletes were put to the test in qualifiers where each athlete had 2 runs. Unbelievable talent from all over Canada and US was witnessed but only a total of fifty riders were put through to finals. Some stand out momenets of the days competition included; Father Backflip – a local Seymour pastor, in his early 40’s, dropped back-to-back backflips off of both jumps to the applause of fellow riders. Gabe, a talented local Seymour rider was sending some old school variations of backflips and toeside rodeos to the delight of the tight-knit crowd.

Star studded qualifiers narrowed the pack to the top 15 in both Salomon Ams and Coors Light Pros. With the sun shining and spectators littered throughout the course winning runs were congratulated. In the Salomon Amateur Men’s category Joel Dalacker, new on the competition scene, celebrated back to back wins at Mont Tremblant and Mt Seymour winning 2 ‘Deluxe 5 day Packages’ for Camp of Champions with his winning run of front board to fakie, cab 5, front seven.

The talented woman of the day were Breanna Strangeland who won the sbcwomen.com Best Trick with a board to front board change up and also took down 3rd place for a total of $700. The other outstanding ladies of the day were Casssandra Ironside in 2nd place who dropped a backside 180 to backside 360 and is now in the lead for Coors Light series points. 1st place went to Terri Dregreger who went backside 360 to backside 540 winning herself $500.

Coors Light Pro Men’s category was the largest category with over 50 riders. Kevin Griffin received third place with a run consisting of cab change up to fakie, cab 540 melon, back 9 tail with upper steeze you can expect from Kevin. Second place went to Craig Beaulieau with a nollie back tail, change up, backside 7 indy bone out and front nine into the flats. In the end is was Matt Belzile taking first with a front board 270, Cab 5 on the step down Ripzone feature, and then launched a back 1080 melon grabbed the whole time until he landed on his fingers winning $2000. The Ripzone Best Trick went to Scot Brown with a switch backside rodeo winning $500. Kevin Konings with fifth place finish, only narrowly missing the podium in the heated top five battle is the current Coors Light series points leader and is enroute to Banff Norquay.

The Coors Light YOU LOOK GOOD Rider’s Cup has been providing a platform for young Canadian riders to display their talent. On its 3rd stop in Banff, this 3Star Swatch TTR event is not holding back the action.

On Saturday February 28th, Banff was blessed with blue bird skies and -5 temps with 75 riders showing up to take part. A consistent and substantial crowd supported the riders throughout the day and cheered even louder as Murray Hodgson attempted a double backflip backside 180 and as Matt Munn sent a 70ft one-footer into the flats and yes rode away (after a couple reverts but who cares?!?!) Norquays Jump line acted as the YLGRC09 Banff Open course with the Coors Light Pro categories and Salomon Ams utilized all three jumps while the little guys and women hit the top two jumps.

Pierce Mimura from Fort McMuuray was back again for the second year in a row as a repeat winner in the Amateur category. This year Pierce brought new tricks to the series and stomped a cab 5, back cork 7, front 7. Cassandra Ironside, on a competitive tear this year, locked up her first place win on the tour as she sent a switch back one into a back three melon winning $500 and putting her into the series lead.

Standout riders of the day were Kirsty MacDonald in the qualifiers with backside fives and lofty threes. Unfortunately Kirsty struggled with her landings in the finals and missed the podium. Joel Dalacker, new to the competition scene, entered his third event of the YLGRC09 looked to three-peat after qualifying in 2nd but he too unfortunately struggled with his landings in the finals and missed the podium.

Men’s Coors Light Pro category were plagued with speed issues, those that were either over weight or had wax had no difficulties as they found the podium with their standout runs. Third place went to Geoff Brown who dropped backside rodeo five into a switch backside 900 into a corky-backside-900, which also won him Ripzone Best Trick. Scot Brown launched himself into second place with a switch backside rodeo five, frontside 7 tail ending with cork- backside 7 melon. The big winner of the day was Nash Lajeunesse (THINK FINESSE) dropped an entire switch run consisting of a switch backside 7, cab 7, and banged out a switch backside 900… he killed it!!!

Current Coors Light Pro points leaders are Cassandra Ironside with 22,500 points and Kevin Konings with 19,000 points. Both Ontario natives are heading to their home mountain, Blue Mountain this weekend (March 7) with the hopes of being the overall series female and male winners.

Awards and prize give aways took place at Norquay’s Day Lodge patio. The winners were as follows:

Grom Men (12 & under)
1. Jack Dawson
2. James Leal
